Integrated Arts Earn Exemplary School Designation

The Arts Schools Network Board of Directors has designated Abbotsford School of Integrated Arts (Sumas Mountain) and Abbotsford School of Integrated Arts (North Poplar) as Exemplary Schools in recognition of their commitment to excellence in the arts. The five-year designation is awarded for 2018-2023.

Arts Schools Network (ASN), one of North America’s largest professional membership organization of specialized arts schools, awards Exemplary School designations to members that follow A Guide to Assessing Your Arts School in strategically evaluating their school’s purpose, operations, and educational programs. The Guide is a collaborative effort by ASN and the Accrediting Commission for Community and Precollegiate Arts Schools (ACCPAS). ASN will honor the schools at the ASN 2018 Annual Conference, October 23-26, 2018 in Orange County, California.

Abbotsford School District’s Integrated Arts program believes in instilling a passion for learning through arts integration, deepening and enhancing student achievement. Students are encouraged to be active and enthusiastic participants in the arts and to be respectful of their self, others, and the learning environment. Students have the opportunity to be curious and open-minded about the world around them and take responsibility for their learning, while also cultivating joyful experiences, connections, and relationships. Teachers create classroom environments where students actively live and learn through the arts, infusing arts into the learning and collaboratively planning, teaching, and assessing the exploration of big ideas. The schools’ mission is to explore, express and excel.

Melissa Brookes, Managing Director for ASN, said, “We offer guidance, inspiration and incentives to art school leaders who strive for excellence in their schools. When they demonstrate outstanding efforts toward this goal, as they do by following A Guide to Assessing Your Arts School, we recognize and reward their achievements with this designation.”
